Nursing can be described as both an art and a science; a heart and a mind. At its heart, lies a fundamental respect for human dignity and an intuition for a patient’s needs. This is supported by the mind, in the form of rigorous core learning. Due to the vast range of specialisms and complex skills in the nursing profession, each nurse will have specific strengths, passions, and expertise.

Nursing is a profession within the health care sector focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life.

Registration to Become Registered Nurse in India.

These programs are governed by Indian Nursing Council, State Nursing Council and Nursing Examination Board. After these courses, the students need to register as nurse in nursing council both Indian Nursing council and State Nursing Council. For GNM and ANM students, they need to register in Nurses Examination Board. If you don’t register, then you aren’t certified as nurses to work in Hospitals and Academic Institution.

If you wish to move abroad for work, you need to register in the council of particular countries. In some countries, you need to write examination to be registered nurses and after passing the exams you are entitled as RN or Registered Nurse.

Nursing Courses

Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (ANM)

Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (ANM) course is a Medical Nursing course. It deals with the field of science and covers healthcare profession focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may maintain, attain or recover optimal health and quality of life from conception to death.Auxiliary nurse midwife, is a village-level female health worker in India who is known as the first contact person between the community and the health services. ANMs are regarded as the grass-roots workers in the health organization pyramid.

ANM is a two year undergraduate certificate-level course.The duration of the course varies for different institutes, It often ranges from 1 to 3 academic years. Minimum Eligibility to ANM Course is 10+2 level of education with minimum aggregate of 45% marks.

GNM nursing (General Nursing and Midwifery)

GNM programme is meant to prepare general nurses who can efficiently perform as members of the health team and capable of dealing the competencies in both the hospitals and other such organizations.

GNM’s may work in a variety of health care settings within both the public and private healthcare sectors and may operate in hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, the armed forces, community centers, health care facilities, and college universities among other health care settings.

Duration: The course is 3½ years long. Academic program is of 3 years and 6 months are dedicated towards internship.

Eligibility:

  • 10+2 class passed or its equivalent preferably with science (physics, chemistry and Biology) subjects with aggregate 45% marks.

  • Those who have cleared 10+2 vocational ANM course from the school recognized by Indian Nursing Council.

  • ANM training i.e. 10+11/2 years training should also have passed +2 or its equivalent examination.

  • Admissions to GNM courses are done mostly on the basis of marks secured by a candidate in class 12 exams.

B.Sc. Nursing

Bachelor of Science- Nursing or B.Sc. Nursing is a four years professional course offered under Faculty of Nursing & Para-medical Sciences. ... In India, the Nursing course is registered and controlled by Indian Nursing Council.The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on 31st December of the year in which admission is sought. 

Eligibility: 10+2 class passed with Science (PCB) & English Core/English Elective with aggregate of 50% marks from recognized board under AISSCE/CBSE/ICSE/SSCE/HSCE or other equivalentBoard.

Admission:Reputed institutes follow merit based admission process. Under this scheme, marks scored by students in 10+2 board examination and/or relevant entrance test (national, state or institute-wise) are taken into consideration. Seats are allotted to deserving candidates on the basis of merit marks obtained by them.

In Kerala admission to BSc Nursing is done by Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE). Students seeking admission to BSc Nursing should apply to cee-kerala for admissions

POST BASIC BSc NURSING

The post basic B.Sc. Nursing is a three year degree programme for in-servicenurses. The programme was launched in July 1994 and is recognised by the IndianNursing Council (INC).

BSc (Post Basic) is a type of BSc (Honors), in which the candidate has done some prior academic work which is lower than that of a Bachelor’s degree. ... For example if you have done GNM (Nursing), than you can directly opt for a Post Basic BSc(Nursing), in lieu of spending 4 years of doing BSc(Nursing) again.The aim of the program at the post basic level is to upgrade the diploma (GNM) nurses to: Assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses and midwives at basic level in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.

Eligibility:10+2 with three years Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) with minimum of two years’ experience in the profession. . (For male nurses or nurses who have not done midwifery in the GNM programme should have a certificate in any of the nursing courses of 6-9 months duration prescribed by the Indian Nursing Council in lieu of midwifery). 

OR 

10th class (Matriculation) or its equivalent with three years Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) with minimum of five years’ experience in the profession. (For male nurses or nurses who have not done midwifery in the GNM Programme should have a certificate in any of the nursing courses of 6-9 months duration prescribed by the Indian Nursing Council in lieu of midwifery)

M. Sc. Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing

 M. Sc. Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing is a Two-Year Postgraduate academic programme offered in different specialities. The aim of the programme is to prepare post graduates to assume responsibilities as nurse specialists, consultants, educators, administrators and researchers in a wide variety of professional settings. 

Nurses who are having bachelor degrees and want to take their career to the next the level, they can choose MSc degree programs. The nursing field is growing rapidly due to increase in population and advancements in Health care Technology. Due to these advancements in health care technology need highly trained nurses who can assist better. Master’s degree of nursing is playing very important role for many jobs and is highly in demand. Today nursing diploma or Bachelor of Nursing is not sufficient for nurses. Students of MSc Nursing have more opportunities after completion of their master’s program.

In Kerala admissions are done by Directorate of Medical Education. There will be an entrance examination under DME.

M.Phil. & PhD Nursing

 Ph.D. in Nursing is a completely focused on the care of individuals, communities, families and to support them to maintain good health, to have a fast recovery and to have a good life. This course is available in regular mode only as candidates need to have practice sessions to get skilled in handling the patients with different kinds of illness. 

Candidates who have completed their Post-Graduation or Master’s degree in Nursing from a reputed and registered institute and have acquired 55% marks as aggregate are eligible for this course. Candidates holding M.Phil. Degree in Nursing are also eligible for this course in some institutes some institutes also accept professionals having experience in the field of Nursing. The age criteria need to be checked before submission of application form from the selected institute.

Military Nursing

FEMALE CANDIDATES (only) can seek admission to 4 years B Sc. (Nursing) Course at Colleges of Nursing of Armed Forces Medical Services. Candidates will be awarded admission in Colleges of Nursing based on the merit cum choice, subject to medical fitness and the vacancy in each College. The Selected candidates shall execute an Agreement/Bond to serve in the Military Nursing Service. On successful completion of Nursing Training (4years), the candidates will be granted Permanent/Short Service Commission in the Military Nursing Service, under the Terms and Conditions laid down for grant of such Commission. They shall have to refund the Bond money as per the Bond executed in the event of withdrawal from the Course, Termination of training or refusal to accept Commission in the MNS, if offered. During training they will be provided with free ration, accommodation, uniform allowance and monthly stipend as per existing Terms and Conditions as amended from time to time.

Educational Qualification – Candidates must have passed in the first attempt, Senior Secondary Examination (10+2) or equivalent (12 Years schooling) examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany & Zoology) and English with not less than 50% aggregate marks as a regular student from a Statutory / Recognized Board /University/ Examination Body. Candidates who will be appearing for Final year of qualifying examination during the current academic session may also apply provisionally.

Selection: Eligible applicants will be called for an objective type Written Test of 90 minutes duration likely to be held in Jan every year, covering General English, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and General Intelligence. On the basis of merit of written Test, candidates will be called for interview. Final selection will be based on combined merit of Written Test & Interview, subject to medical fitness and vacancy in each College

Diploma in Nutrition and Health Education (DNHE)

The Diploma Programme is a holistic package, which provides opportunities to the learner to gain knowledge about nutrition and public health. Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS)

Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) are licensed registered nurses who have graduate preparation (Master's or Doctorate) in nursing as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. The CNS, with advanced educational preparation and expertise in a specialty area of nursing practice, has a unique APRN role - to improve health care quality. A clinical nurse specialist is an advanced-practice nurse who provides patient care and consultation services for a variety of health care areas. These professionals typically practice medicine, conduct research and manage staff within a specific type of patient population, medical specialty or setting.

Requirements to take CNS exam:

  1. Masters of Science in Nursing degree or other graduate-level program preparation for the CNS role, which is accredited by the CCNE or ACEN.

  2. Current RN licensure.

  3. A minimum of 500 supervised clinical hours in the specialty area.

  4. Occupational/ Industrial health nurses

    In order to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses, occupational health nurses assess workplaces in an effort to identify possible hazards. These nurses also educate employers and employees on how to prevent accidents and injuries. They may suggest changes in procedures or develop other ways to make workplaces safer.The job duties of an occupational health nurse may include: Developing and implementing health and safety programs. Developing disease prevention programs, such as smoking cessation, exercise, and healthy eating programs. Documenting all employee injuries and illnesses within the workplace.

    To become an occupational nurse, you must first become a licensed registered nurse (RN). In order to become an RN, you will need to complete an Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) program or Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN).

    School Nurse

    The school nurse has a crucial role in the seamless provision of comprehensive health services to children and youth. Increasing numbers of students enter schools with chronic health conditions that require management during the school day. This policy statement describes for pediatricians the role of the school nurse in serving as a team member in providing preventive services, early identification of problems, interventions, and referrals to foster health and educational success. To optimally care for children, preparation, ongoing education, and appropriate staffing levels of school nurses are important factors for success. Recommendations are offered to facilitate the working relationship between the school nurse and the child's medical home. This statement has been endorsed by the National Association of School Nurses.
