The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research is a National Centre of the Government of India, under the umbrella of the Department of Atomic Energy, as well as a deemed University awarding degrees for master's and doctoral programs. The Institute was founded in 1945 with support from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust under the vision of DrHomiBhabha. At TIFR, we carry out basic research in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science and science education. Main campus is located in Mumbai, with centres at Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research is India's premier institution for advanced research in fundamental sciences. The Institute runs a graduate programme leading to the award of Ph.D., Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. as well as M.Sc. degree in certain subjects. With its distinguished faculty, world class facilities and stimulating research environment, it is an ideal place for aspiring scientists to initiate their career.

The Graduate Programme at TIFR is classified into the following Subjects - Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer & Systems Sciences (including Communications and Applied Probability) and Science Education. It is conducted at the Mumbai campus and various National Centres of TIFR.

Courses at TIFR

School of Natural Sciences

Astronomy & Astrophysics

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics is a part of the School of Natural Sciences of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Located in the scenic Mumbai campus, the department carries out cutting edge research in theoretical and observational astrophysics, with an active interest in instrumentation. Along with this, the department also focusses on training graduate and postdoctoral students, and helps them develop into leading scientists in their fields.

Department of Biological Sciences

TIFR Biological Sciences Department is India's leading biology research department where there are opportunities for students to work on various streams of biological and multidisciplinary sciences: molecular biology, cell biology, genomics and systems biology, neuroscience and biophysics. Here students conduct research under the supervision of their supervisor with an aim to engage them in the processes of intellectual inquiry, problem solving and creative thinking. The department imparts three degree course: Ph.D., Integrated Ph.D. and M.Sc.

Admission to these degree programmes are through an entrance test conducted by TIFR in December each year, at various test centers in India. Details of the examination dates and how to apply can be found at the TIFR University Cell website

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL SCIENCES

SCHOOL OF NATURAL SCIENCES

TIFR has a vibrant international level research environment which is highly conducive for graduate studies. The department of chemical sciences offers a Ph.D. program and students are selected through a highly competitive entrance exam. Students who qualify for the graduate program of the institute directly after B.Sc. can also obtain an M. Sc. degree enroute to their PhD program.

The department conducts a vibrant graduate program that offers Ph.D. degree. The structured and rigorous curriculum offers both - courses and term projects - in the first year of graduate study. The research training that the students receive is comparable to the best universities in the world. The department has a good faculty to student ratio, which enables students to seamlessly interact with the faculty members. The admission to this program is through a nationwide entrance test that is conducted on the second Sunday of December every year. Students are strongly encouraged to be on the lookout for an advertisement on the Institute’s website as well as in the national newspapers.

Department of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science (CMPMS)

Department of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science (CMPMS) at TIFR! Research in CMPMS asks questions about the nature of materials that are in the condensed state – familiar condensed phases like solids or liquids, but also more exotic phases such as the superconducting phase at low temperatures, magnetically-ordered phases etc. This department also work on semiconductors and nanostructured materials, and soft-matter. We study the electronic, physical, mechanical, optical, and chemical properties of materials, in relation to their structure.

The emphasis is on the experimental measurement of various properties using different probes in an attempt to understand the underlying physical behavior. This department fabricate optoelectronic, plasmonic, and superconducting device structures that serve as test sytems to study novel phenomena and also enable real world applications

Department of High Energy Physics

Department of Nuclear and Atomic Physics

TIFR has a vibrant international level research environment which is highly conducive for graduatestudies. The department of nuclear and atomic physics offers a Ph.D. program and students are selected through a highly competitive entrance exam. Students who qualify for the graduate program of the institute directly after B.Sc. can also obtain an M. Sc. degree enroute to their PhD program.

Integrated Ph.D. Degree

This is a 6 years research program, at the end of which the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree are awarded.
