BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery)
BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery) is an undergraduate degree programme in the field of Unani medicine and surgery. This degree covers the medical knowledge of the Unani system. This program is yet another option for those electing to get an undergraduate degree in alternative medicine. Unani is the system of alternative medicines. The patients are taken care by enhancing the natural healing power of the human body. The concept of Unani is that the body rejuvenates itself because of its self-healing power. We just need to help it by enhancing the natural healing power.
The Unani system of medicine; sometimes referred to as Greeco-Arab medicine or Unani Tibb; is based on Greek philosophy. As per this traditional system, the human body is composed of four basic elements: earth, air, water and fire having cold, hot, wet and dry temperaments respectively. The body fluids are composed of four humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile. These humors have their own temperament:
- Blood: hot & wet
- Phlegm: cold & hot
- Yellow bile: hot & dry
- Black bile: cold & dry
The quality and quantity of four humors affect the state of health and disease in the body.
The Unani medicine system was introduced to India about a thousand years ago by the Muslims and became indigenous to the country. It is now practiced in the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent. The Unani physicians who settled in India have added new drugs to the system and therefore the Unani system practiced in India is somewhat different from the original Greek form.
Course:
BUMS is a bachelor’s degree. The length of this program is about five and a half years, including one year for a compulsory rotating internship. The requirements for admission into this programme are that the student has taken and passed (with at least 50 percent marks) the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) or 10+2 in the science stream. Necessary subjects are biology, chemistry, physics, Urdu and English. Another way to have the necessary educational background is to pass the Pre-Tib one-year exam. The student must also be at least 17 years of age at time of admission for the BUMS course.
Admission
Admission to BUMS is through NEET UG examination conducted on a national Basis.
