B.Sc. Optometry is a 4 year Undergraduate Program. Optometry is a health care profession which deals with the examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases and disorders of the visual systemOphthalmologists differ from optometrists and opticians in their levels of training and in what they can diagnose and treat. As a medical doctor who has completed college and at least eight years of additional medical training, an ophthalmologist is licensed to practice medicine and surgery. Because vision problems tend to occur more frequently later in life, an aging population will lead to demand for optometrists.
Scope and Career Options
Optometrist is the independent primary health care provider who specializes in eye care and visual health. An Optometrist is medical professionals, but not physicians. Assist ophthalmologists in hospital clinic
Practice in optical establishments
Run optical shop
Have excellent job opportunities overseas.
Offer clinical services to multinationals dealing, with the manufacturing and distribution of ophthalmic lenses, contact lenses and ophthalmic instruments.
Start manufacturing unit for optical lenses.
For those interested in higher studies can join for M.Sc. and PhD programs and take up teaching Optometry as a carrier.
Eligibility:
Candidates should have completed 10+2 level with Pure Science/Bio-Science Subjects/B.Sc. With Physics, Chemistry, Math./Physiology/Zoology from any recognised Board/Council/University.
B.Sc. Optometry: Admission Procedure
Admission to B.Sc. Optometry course is provided to eligible candidates on the basis of performance in a relevant entrance examination, which is conducted either by the concerned institution or at the State or national level. A cut-off score is set for the examination and students clearing that are eligible for the counselling process.
In Kerala the optometry course is managed by Kerala Paramedical Council.
